Exploring aviation

The Covid-19 pandemic has put the aviation sector at an unprecedented point. However, a year into the pandemic, it is already clear that it is a resilient sector that will have changes, but that will continue to be one of the industries with the most significant projection and future worldwide. It is also a perfect industry to bring STEM topics to young people and children due to its level of inspiration and areas of science and technology involved. Due to these reasons, we are delighted to work with the support of the ISTAT Foundation in a campaign that seeks to encourage children and young people to pursue careers related to the aviation area while contributing to economic and social improvement in the world. Aviation is a sector that provides millions of jobs around the world.

This program seeks that children and young people explore the possibilities that this industry has, knowing the diferent roles that intervene in it and improving their skills to consider a career in the sector. Also, they do so from the perspective of diversity, inclusion, social responsibility, and sustainability as global citizens.

The “Toward the Skies: exploring aviation” program seeks to encourage children and young people to consider careers in the aviation area: to be engineers, technicians, pilots, and others related. Cipsela will implement strategies with very inspiring STEM educational methodologies. It will be a seedbed program based on four parts:

The flight of airplanes: applying the methodology of learning based on challenges, while designing and building a small aircraft, they will learn the basic principles of atmospheric flight, including aerodynamics, flight mechanics, and main forces on an airplane.

The world of aviation: using the STEM strategy by gamification, students will learn how airlines operate, how diferent air routes work, the importance of air safety in civil aviation, the other professions necessary to achieve safe commercial aviation, and eficient roles. There will be visits to an MRO base and an airport control tower and inspirational talks from professionals in the aviation sector.

Learning to fly an airplane: using STEM flight simulators, students supported by Cipsela instructors will learn the basics of flying commercial airplanes, together with what they have learned in the previous topics. They will simulate flights as they occur in commercial aviation.

Drones and Responsible Aviation: Students will build a small DIY drone with a project-based learning approach. The purpose is to get to know the technology of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with the learning-by-doing methodology and visualize the possibilities of these technologies as a new sector of civil aviation. Besides, they should be made aware of the responsibility of using this type of technology in national airspaces and its interaction with crewed aircraft.

Impact of the program in Colombia and the world

Colombia, due to its position in the Americas, has a great opportunity in the civil aviation sector: new MRO bases have been built, large Latin American airlines are considering using Colombian airports as HUBs for their operation, and despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the projection of the increase in the sector continues to be very good, an example is the continuous growth of the low-cost airlines in the region. There is a chance to generate economic and social added value. It is an ample opportunity for children and young people to consider careers in an inspiring and global area.

Impact on students:

Understand a sector with a global projection that can define their Life Project. General learning of how the world of aviation works, which, due to passenger mobilization and global logistics chains, impacts practically any human being on the planet. - Aviation has always been an excellent inspiration for humanity, in addition to constantly applying the best of science and technology available. Children and young people who participate in these courses will surely see science and technology from another perspective

Impact on the aviation industry

The aviation industry must prepare a next generation workforce. Inspiring children and young people in this sector will guarantee the readiness of professionals to face the challenges and opportunities of the industry in the next decade, not only locally but globally. Aviation is a network that works together all over the planet. - Having children and young people already involved in STEM curricula based on aviation will guarantee in a few years to have staff with an updated, innovative and responsible vision for sustainable aviation that generates economic and social well-being at a global level.

Sustainable Aviation: a sector aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals

The civil aviation sector has great potential to improve people's social mobility, achieve life projects, improve diversity and inclusion in the industry, and with all this contribute to the construction of a better society. As you inspire a new generation of professionals for local and global aviation, you contribute to a better global society.
